A couple of lifetimes ago I was in a metal band with my school friend, Steve Kilpatrick. We lost contact after I left home, but he tracked me down 18 years later and we’ve been firm friends again ever since. He found me by googling my name and ‘writer’ and wasn’t surprised to find that’s exactly what I’d become. Likewise I wasn’t surprised to find out he had continued with his love of music (he now has a doctorate) and was a much lauded composer in his own right. These days he resides in France where he’s built his own recording studio and you should follow him and check out his work.
Steve convinced me to write a libretto for an opera version of our comic book, The Night Bride, and later came up with the idea of more musical collaboration. I’ve worked with Steve on many projects and he’s also provided music for some of my comic books with John Carpenter, but the most fun we’ve had was putting together a side project called B.E.R.G. (One of our many mutual interests is, of course, all things Quatermass)
Here are some of the tracks we made inspired by our favourite movies. Steve did the music and put the actual band together while I provided the lyrics.
Back From The Black – inspired by Event Horizon (1997)
Who Goes There? – inspired by The Thing (1982) – John got a real kick out of this one!
All Messed Up – inspired by Night of the Living Dead (1968)
